The Bulgarian national naval exercise Breeze 2025 this July conducted drills for responding to a fire on board a naval vessel in the port of Varna and containment of oil spill, from a stricken vessel, as well as rescuing crew members overboard. Firefighting teams and volunteers as well as medical teams took part. The Volunteer Club Extremen, at the Tourist Society Rodni Balkani, collaborating with RESPONSE on the design of training schemes addressing environmental risks, took part in the exercise. According to the scenario, all local services were mobilised to extinguish the fire, evacuate the injured and set up the oil spill booms to minimise the damage to the marine environment. Traditionally, the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA), which monitors the enforcement of legislation related to the reduction of the risk of maritime accidents, pollution of the sea by ships and loss of life at sea, participated in the exercise.
