RESPONSE project representatives actively participated in the Regional Roundtable on War-Related Pollution in the Black Sea, organized under the framework of the Common Maritime Agenda (CMA).
During the event, RESPONSE shared key findings on marine pollution in the Black Sea, particularly that linked to military activity and the ongoing war in Ukraine. As conflicts continue to reshape the geopolitical landscape, their environmental impacts—ranging from munitions and infrastructure damage to chemical contamination—are increasingly evident in the region’s marine ecosystems.
This roundtable brought together policymakers, researchers, civil society, and affected stakeholders for an open dialogue on war-related marine pollution. The discussion focused on ecological monitoring, risk assessment, and the need for coordinated regional responses.
The participation of RESPONSE contributed to:
- An informed exchange on pollution resulting from warfare,
- Cross-sector dialogue to support collaborative response strategies,
- Reinforcing the role of science-based initiatives like RESPONSE, EU4EMBLAS, and Black Sea Sierra in shaping future priorities.
This event marked a significant step toward identifying joint actions and mitigation strategies to protect the Black Sea’s biodiversity and sustainability from the long-term effects of conflict.
